Topic:  The Ten Myths of Brain Injury Recovery

Participants will review the ten myths most commonly associated with brain injury recovery.  We will review how these myths may have originated and more importantly formulate a more clear and accurate perception involving brain injury recovery.  We will also explore what measures the survivor, family member and/or staff can initiate to help improve a person’s recovery within their home and community setting.  Participant questions will be encouraged throughout the session.

Guest Speaker: Chip Howe, M.A.

Having worked for the Mary Lee Foundation for over 25 years, Mr. Howe currently serves as the Admissions Coordinator for the Rehabilitation Center, which specializes in Traumatic Brain Injury.  Mr. Howe obtained his BA Degree in Psychology at UT and his MA Degree in Child Psychology at Incarnate Word College.  Appointed by the Austin City Council, Mr. Howe serves as Commissioner on the Austin Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities.  Mr. Howe was presented the “Texas Humanitarian Award” by the Brain Injury Association of Texas, “The Distinguished Service Award” by the City of Austin and received the distinguished “National Leadership Award of Excellence” by the Brain Injury Association of America.

JUNE 8th TRAINING SESSION: Discussion will focus on ProTECT which is conducting a research study to see if progesterone, a hormone normally found in our bodies, is useful in limiting the amount of brain damage from TBI.  This study is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and will be occurring at University Medical Center at Brackenridge.  The opportunity to Opt Out of this mandated research project in advance will also be discussed.

Food Pantry

Good nutrition is necessary, but very expensive. Mary Lee residents typically live on $500-$700/month disability payments. $1 buys at least $4 worth of food for the Mary Lee Food Pantry.
