Central Texas African American Family Support Conference

For the second year in a row the Mary Lee Foundation Rehabilitation Center was selected as one of the 25 mental health programs in Austin to Exhibit at the Central Texas African American Family Support Conference.  Held at the Omni Hotel on 2/12/09 and 2/13/09, this innovative and increasingly popular conference is planned exclusively by and for consumers, family members and professionals utilizing culturally sensitive and relevant education and support from across the nation.  This year’s conference theme “Empowering Families” was enhanced by selecting conference speakers who were inspirational, knowledgeable and able to effectively facilitate audience participation.

In continuation of its conference tradition of honoring community members who have shown leadership, encouragement and advocacy within the community, special recognition and awards were presented during each luncheon. The MLFRC Staff and Clients that attended this year’s conference reported they had an amazing time listening to the various speakers, learning new and important information and enjoyed visiting with the exhibitors and conference participants.    The Mary Lee Foundation would like to thank the Central Texas African American Family Support Conference (CTAAFSC) Planning Committee and Austin Travis County Mental Health Mental Retardation Board of Trustees for allowing us to be a part of this wonderful conference.

Good nutrition is necessary, but very expensive. Mary Lee residents typically live on $500-$700/month disability payments. $1 buys at least $4 worth of food for the Mary Lee Food Pantry.
