Guest Speaker:  TJ Milling, M.D.

Dr. TJ Milling is an Emergency Room physician and Director of Clinical Research at University Medical Center at Brackenridge and Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas.  He was the research fellow for the American Academy of Emergency Medicine.  He is also the Vice President and Research Medical Director at Hospital Physicians in Clinical Research (HPCR) and principal investigator in Travis County for the ProTECT study in traumatic brain injury.

Topic of Discussion: Upcoming ProTECT research study involving TBI

ProTECT is a research study designed to see if progesterone, a hormone normally found in our bodies, can reduce the amount of brain damage caused from a traumatic brain injury.  Small studies in humans suggest that progesterone, given immediately after a TBI, may help treat brain injuries by reducing brain swelling and damage.  The reason for this study is to find out if progesterone along with standard medical care works better than standard medical care alone to limit damage from TBI.  If progesterone helps brain injury patients get better, it will be a big improvement in the treatment of TBI. This study is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and research will be conducted in approximately 17 cities in the United States, including Austin at University Medical Center at Brackenridge.

Food Pantry

Good nutrition is necessary, but very expensive. Mary Lee residents typically live on $500-$700/month disability payments. $1 buys at least $4 worth of food for the Mary Lee Food Pantry.
