Information:
*Legislation Affecting Your Health Care Services

*Advocating For Health Care Services:
It’s Easier Than You Think & More Important Than You Realize

Participants will learn how health care services are prepared for legislative review and then funded.  Participants will also review the factors which influence legislative funding cuts involving health care services.  Emphasis will be placed on how to prevent services from being eliminated (already been earmarked by our State Legislators) and learn how to effectively advocate for additional services needed.

Guest Speakers:
Bob Kafka & Stephanie Thomas

Bob and Stephanie are grassroots organizers who in 1984 co-founded ADAPT of Texas, a disability rights advocacy organization.  Since then they have taught thousands of people the skills to effectively self-advocate for a more accessible city and improved disability rights & services.  They follow local, state and national disability related legislation, organize groups to speak at legislative sessions and were instrumental in getting many bills passes including the Americans with Disability Act.  As a result of their advocacy Capital Metro enhanced their accessible public transportation; and the City of Austin expanded funding for accessible sidewalks, additional curb ramps and the enhancement of accessible housing requirements; all of which has led Austin to be rated by the National Organization on Disability as one of the most accessible cities in the nation.

Food Pantry

Good nutrition is necessary, but very expensive. Mary Lee residents typically live on $500-$700/month disability payments. $1 buys at least $4 worth of food for the Mary Lee Food Pantry.
