During the first 15 minutes the participants meet with each other and light refreshments are served. Then the participants divide into groups. There are groups for survivors of brain injury as well as groups for loved ones and caregivers.
This is a peer-to peer support group setting where families, love ones and caregivers share their experiences and survivors talk about the changes in their lives and how they are coping. Typically family members will separate from survivors, but this is not required. Most first Tuesday Brain Injury Association of Austin Support Group meetings have between 30 to 40 people attend. This breaks down to several smaller groups so everyone has an opportunity to share. Each group is moderated by a member of the Board of Directors of the Brain Injury Association of Austin. Attendance is absolutely free.
